5 Tips for Moving from a House to a Condo

Moving from a house to a condo can be difficult. You lose precious square footage, yard space, and a little bit of distance between you and your neighbours. At the same time, living in a condo can be more convenient. There’s less maintenance, more amenities, and a sense of community that can’t be replicated.

If you’re about to make the move from a house to a condo, here are a few tips to make the change a little easier:

#1: Plan Ahead

Ideally, you want to start preparing to move three months before your move-in date. Whether you’re planning to hire movers or rent a truck and do it on your own, this is the time to get estimates from different companies and schedule a move. Some condominiums offer larger elevators for residents to rent out for moving furniture. Call ahead to see if your new condo has availability on your move-in date.

#2: Start Downsizing

You probably won’t be able to fit everything you own in a condo. Start separating your possessions into three categories: must take, want to take, and donate. While you’re downsizing, aim to only keep about one-third to one-half of your current belongings.

#3: Store the Things You Can’t Part With

If you can’t seem to get rid of things, consider storing them. Whether you’re storing furniture that doesn’t fit in your new condo or boxes of holiday decorations that you don’t have space for, self-storage can help you safely and securely store your belongings.

#4: Be Smart About Packing

Packing is one of the most stressful parts about moving. You want to make sure that your valuables are padded, and boxes aren’t too heavy to carry. It can be tempting to just throw everything into boxes but sorting your possessions by room and labelling boxes can help make unpacking easier for you.
