Three Great Tips for Long-Term Vacation Storage

Three Great Tips for Long-Term Vacation Storage

There’s nothing more exciting than going on a vacation to a far-flung location, and after working hard all year you certainly deserve one. The only downside is the long to-do list before leaving. With the rise in burglaries resulting from travel photos tipping off would-be burglars that a home is empty, more and more Ontarians are using public storage as a place to keep their things secure while they’re away.

If you need storage for long-term vacation, use these three tips to do it right.

Think of your valuables first

When time is of the essence, make sure to pay special attention to your valuables. We find that many of our customers are in a rush and end up packing away boxes full of items that they really don’t need to protect. A break-in is a worst-case scenario, and one that is not very likely to happen. You’ll end up wasting your time and buying a storage unit that’s larger than you really need. Instead, focus on the items that you can’t take with you but can’t live without.

Organize the unit properly

Storing for vacation is a bit different than long-term storage where you’ll return frequently. In this case, you’ll be gone for a period of time and come back and get everything all at once (though we don’t mind if you stay!). It’s important that you label everything in great detail; it will be hard to remember everything after being away for so long. Place the heaviest items in last so they can be loaded into your car first and leave a walkway in the unit or at least a bit of open space at the front for easy maneuvering.

Investigate the storage facility’s security

Some public storage facilities in Ontario have a guard on site and just a single gate protecting the units. Others are like hi-tech fortresses with 24/7 security, high walls, and secured individual access. Investigate the facility properly to make sure that your valuables will be under lock and key while you’re away. At Migson, we always put security and accessibility first for our customers.

If you’re going away on holiday for an extended time, then you’ll probably want to keep your valuables in secured storage to protect them from break-ins. If so, use these three tips for long-term vacation storage. When it comes to security and accessibility, there’s no better name than Migson. With our five convenient locations across Ontario, everywhere is easily accessible!
