Finding the Right Storage Facility
You’ve decided you want to turn your garage into a beautiful art studio where you can work on your own projects in a clutter-free space. The upfront costs of painting, re-doing flooring and installing the right equipment is your primary focus and you’d like to take the time to decide on more permanent storage solutions for your seasonal items.
Why not put your items into public storage? It’s a simple, cost-effective and secure way of storing items you do not need to use every day.
We’ve developed some questions that are important to ask when it comes to finding the right storage facility.
Where is it located?
A good self-storage facility is sturdy and sheltered from the outdoors. It should be easily accessible to you and not too far from where you live. For instance, at Migson Public Storage we have five locations in the Greater Toronto Area to serve our customers, and two in southwestern Ontario.
Accessibility is important especially if you’ll be storing seasonal items you’ll want to use regularly like bikes and sports equipment.
Tip: Make sure that your storage facility is not vulnerable to outdoor factors
- Heat or cold can affect items especially antiques, clothing, furniture and electrical appliances, and vehicles
- Indoor temperature and moisture content will determine the dampness in the walls that can cause mold to grow onto your belongings
Tip: Stack your boxes and items away from the wall to ensure that your temperature-sensitive items are not affected
How well maintained is the facility?
Mold, mildew, temperature changes and other storage-related concerns also stem from how well the storage facility is maintained. If the storage facility hasn’t been cleaned, if there are crevices, droughts, holes and excessive residue, these are all factors that will affect your items as they increase the chance of them being susceptible to pests.
Tip: Ask questions!
- Does the storage unit or facility as a whole look and feel clean and well-kept?
- What are their policies or protocol regarding keeping a pest-free environment?
- Do they have any advice on counteracting moisture build-up?
How secure is it?
Finally, you want to make sure you’re storing your items in a secure facility with good measures and practices.
Tip: Pack your possessions properly before you bring them into storage. Your storage facility should offer packing supplies to make sure that your items are kept in good condition.
We offer furniture covers, specialty boxes, and packing supplies like bubble wrap, foam wrap, tape for all your packing needs.
24/7 surveillance is important –at Migson Public Storage, we have security cameras all around our facilities with adequate secure fencing and unique access codes that ensure only the person whose belongings are in storage have access.
We also have live-in managers who are always at the facility ensuring that things are running smoothly.
These are qualities that you should look for in a storage facility’s security protocol so you can rest assure that your items are secured properly.
